Del Mar Picks

Today’s Expert Analysis & Betting Insights

Del Mar attracts big pools, sharp barns, and the kind of competitive racing that separates real handicappers from the crowd. It’s built as a one-mile dirt oval with chutes for 7f and 1¼-mile races, wrapped around a 7/8-mile inner turf course with multiple rail settings and about 40% of the races run on grass. The main track is a modern, sand-heavy surface (about 85% medium–fine sand) that was rebuilt after the Polytrack era and tuned to match Santa Anita’s banking, while the turf course uses a sand profile under hybrid Bermuda. Here you’ll get today’s Del Mar picks and analysis built around that configuration – not a generic “one size fits all” card.

Last Meet’s Del Mar Free Featured Play of the Day

The Del Mar Thoroughbred meet is currently not running. Below is one of our Featured Plays from the most recent meet, so you can see the type of in-depth free picks and full-card handicapping analysis we provide when racing is live. Del Mar’s racing profile — larger fields, a sand-heavy dirt surface that rewards forward horses, and a configurable 7/8-mile turf course with five rail positions (0, 12, 18, 24, 30 feet) — makes figure-driven handicapping especially effective here, and the tabbed layout shows our projected figures, pace shape, connections, form cycle, and horse-by-horse comments in the same format we use in the Digest. When the meet is live, this section also includes free downloadable samples from our Del Mar tools (Quick Picks, Fast Figs, Fractional Charting, and more) so you can test-drive the products before buying a full card.

How We Break Down a Del Mar Race

The tabbed layout above mirrors how we handicap a Del Mar race from the ground up. We start with the configuration: a one-mile dirt main track with chutes for 7f and 1¼ miles, plus a 7/8-mile inner turf course with chutes for 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles and rails that can sit at 0, 12, 18, 24, or 30 feet. About 40% of all races here are on that turf course, so understanding which surface and distance you’re actually looking at is step one — you simply can’t treat “1 mile at Del Mar” like 1 mile at a tight two-turn track.

On dirt, recent summer/Bing meets tell a very consistent story: in sprints, horses on or within a length of the lead have won roughly two-thirds of the races, with stalkers taking most of the rest and true deep closers (4+ back early) only popping up in a small single-digit slice. In dirt routes, including the one-mile events, front-runners have been winning a bit more than half the races and stalkers close to a third, while closers again lag in the 10% range. Inside posts 1–3 have accounted for more than half of the route wins, and inside speed from those gates has won close to a third of all dirt routes by itself. When you see a genuine lone or dominant speed horse drawn inside at a mile, you’re supposed to take that very seriously — that’s how the meet has actually been won, not a theory.

On the turf, the route profile has changed over time. In 2023 turf routes, front-running types won only around one-fifth of the races and the clear edge went to stalkers and closers. In 2024, across a larger sample of turf routes, the running-style distribution was almost perfectly balanced — roughly one-third each for speed, stalkers, and closers — and ABR described the course as remarkably fair. At a mile, posts have played fairly across the gate, but at 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles the win rates for far-outside posts (7+) drop off noticeably, which is why we treat wide-draw, pace-dependent types with more skepticism in those longer turf routes.

All turf sprints at Del Mar are 5 furlongs, and the last two meets say you want some early foot without getting locked into “wire or die.” In 2023, front-end types won around 45% of these races and closers picked off less than 20%; in 2024, speed horses still won a bit over 40%, but stalkers and late runners combined to win the majority and post positions spread out more evenly across the gate. The upshot is that you upgrade speed and pressers first, but you don’t automatically toss every horse who sits a couple lengths off in these 5f turf dashes.

All of that is why our CPR/FIRE rankings and Fast Figs are presented alongside running-style tags, class levels, RCL, and track-profile data. We’re not just trying to identify the “best horse” on paper — we’re trying to identify the horse whose style, post, and projected figure actually fit this year’s version of Del Mar’s dirt and turf. Seeing all of those factors together is what helps you separate real contenders from public chalk and make smarter Del Mar horse racing picks.

Del Mar Stakes Races This Week

The Del Mar Thoroughbred meet is currently not running, so there are no stakes races scheduled this week. When the meet is live, Del Mar’s stakes schedule draws some of the strongest turf and dirt runners in California, and those races often produce the best betting opportunities of the season. The combination of big fields, proven class, and a one-mile dirt track plus a 7/8-mile turf course that can be configured by rail position gives value players several ways to attack. During the live meet, this section will list that week’s Del Mar stakes lineup — including graded turf events at 5f, 1m, and 1 1/16+, marathon routes, and key prep races — which routinely generate above-average exotic payouts.

Del Mar Carryovers

The Del Mar Thoroughbred meet is currently not running, so there are no active carryovers on the board right now. When the meet is live, Del Mar’s carryovers are some of the best opportunities on the Southern California circuit, especially in the late Pick 4 and Pick 5 where the pools build quickly and public money can drift. When Del Mar posts a double or triple carryover, sharp players know it’s a spot to press the advantage. During the live meet, this section is updated with the latest Del Mar Pick 5 carryovers, Pick 6 jackpots, and other multi-race pool boosts so you can zero in on the sequences with real value.

All payout results listed above are based on a $2 win bet on the top pick/figure for each product.  When multiple horses share the same high figure we use the horse with highest Fast Fig to break the tie.  If multiple horses shared the same high figure and Fast Fig then the horse, from that group, with the highest CPR would be chosen.  When calculating Fast Figs and multiple horses share the same high Fast Fig we use the horse with the highest FNLRAT to break the tie.
