American Pharoah Stakes (G1) Breakdown
- Desert Gate (1) — Jared’s top choice. Already proven at graded level, versatile, and bred to stretch out. His trip in the Del Mar Futurity suggests he can turn the tables here.
- Kristofferson (6) — Eye-catching debut winner with a huge figure. The question is whether he can handle the stretch to 1 1/16 miles in only his second start.
- Plutarch (3) — Better suited for dirt than turf, could sneak into the trifecta at a price.
- Intrepido (2) — Wire-to-wire maiden win flattered by slow fractions; facing tougher pace pressure here.
- Civil Liberty (4) — Honest maiden, but still winless. Will need another gear.
- Balboa (5) — Baffert trainee with angles (blinkers off, stretching out) but hasn’t run fast enough yet.
Betting Angle: Desert Gate has the class + experience edge. Kristofferson is the wildcard. Exotic tickets should be built around those two.
Oak Leaf Stakes (G2) Breakdown
- Explora (6) — Heavy favorite for Baffert. Blinkers off, stretching out, Hernandez rides. The filly to beat.
- Lwali (3) — Jared’s upset pick. Improving filly who looks ready for two turns and offers value at 4-1.
- Himika (4) — Quick but burned up on the front end last time. If she relaxes, she could bounce back.
- Heaven’s Bolt (5) — Debut winner but numbers are light for this level. Needs big improvement.
- Banzai Betty (1) — Lightly raced, second in her debut, but looks overmatched.
- La Ville Lumiere (2) — Has experience but her figures have been sliding. Hard to trust.
Betting Angle: Explora is the obvious choice, but Jared sees value in backing Lwali as the one who could spring an upset.
