Santa Anita Pick 6 Carryover Analysis (Feb 20)

By Jarrod Horak

This post and companion video features In-depth Santa Anita Pick 6 carryover analysis for Feb 20. Race-by-race betting strategy, singles, pace insights and a budget ticket from Today’s Racing Digest.

The Pick 6 carryover amount is $34,288 and the sequence begins with the fourth race.

On a card that looks fairly logical on paper, I’m approaching this sequence with a budget-minded strategy — leaning on pace advantages, projected figures, and a few well-placed singles. The past performance data referenced throughout comes from the Complete Digest, and I’ll be using Fire Numbers, CPR, Fast Figs, and Final Time Ratings to break down each leg.

Race 4 – $8,000 Claiming (1 Mile, Dirt)

Profile: Speed-favoring mile distance.

This race sets up as a two-horse battle on paper.

Top Contenders

  • #1 Austonian – Best Fire Number (82), best CPR, and top Final Time Rating (120). Strong overall class profile.
  • #6 Tougherthantherest – Front-running type with the top Fast Fig (115).

From a pace standpoint, Tougherthantherest figures to be forward early, and at this mile configuration, that’s often dangerous. Austinian brings the most complete figure profile — pace, class, and finishing ability.

I see this race flowing through those two runners.

My Betting Takeaway: Use #1 and #6. Logical two-deep start to the sequence.

Race 5 – Maiden Claiming $32,000 (6 Furlongs)

Profile: Speed-friendly sprint.

Again, pace is king.

Primary Speed

  • #3 Ahrens – Best Fire Number, CPR, and Fast Fig. Posted a 146 pace rating in debut turf sprint. Live barn.
  • #5 Texas Wildcat – Big jump second out (47 → 104 Final Time Rating) after adding Lasix and dropping in class.

Ahrens has early speed and upside. Texas Wildcat improved dramatically with Lasix and class relief. Both project to be on or pressing the lead — and that’s exactly where you want to be at six furlongs.

My Betting Takeaway: Use #3 and #5. If speed holds, it likely comes down to these two.

Race 6 – $25,000 Claiming N3L (6½ Furlongs)

Profile: 6½ furlongs — four of six recent races won by front-end types.

Several viable contenders, but I’m narrowing aggressively here.

Main Players

  • #4 Ballyhooligan – Comes off a strong 120 Final Time Rating win at this distance. Tactical stalker just outside main speed.
  • #3 Handsome Ticket – Likely pacesetter, stepping up in class.

Ballyhooligan looks slightly classier and should get the ideal tracking trip just outside Handsome Ticket. That tactical position gives him first jump turning for home.

Bettor’s Edge

When two speeds hook up at 6½ furlongs, I prefer the horse sitting second — especially when the outside draw allows control of the race flow.

My Betting Takeaway: Single #4 Ballhooligan.

Race 7 – Maiden Optional Claiming $62,500 (6 Furlongs)

Profile: Speed-friendly sprint.

This looks like the most reliable single on the card.

#2 Sharon’s Beach

  • 123 Final Time Rating last out at Santa Anita.
  • 134 Pace Rating.
  • Proven dirt sprint progression (39 → 93 → 123).
  • Front-running style fits the profile perfectly.

This runner was scratched from a stakes route attempt at Sunland Park last weekend and lands in a far more suitable sprint spot. If he reproduces his last effort, he simply outclasses this field.

My Betting Takeaway: Single #2 Sharon’s Beach.

Race 8 – Allowance Optional Claiming (5½ Furlongs, CA-Breds)

Profile: Strong speed bias — front-runners win 46%, pressers 31%, closers 0%.

This race is more competitive than it looks, but I’m keeping it tight.

Primary Uses

  • #4 Still Unwritten – Wire-to-wire turf sprint win off layoff (117 Final Time Rating, 137 Pace Rating). Surface switch is key question.
  • #9 Lino’s Angel – Tactical outside post, consistent dirt sprint form, ideal tracking setup.

Still Unwritten has the raw pace numbers to transfer that turf form to dirt. Lino’s Angel should get a perfect stalking trip outside multiple speeds.

My Betting Takeaway: Use #4 and #9. Trip could decide this leg.

Race 9 – Optional Claiming $20,000 (6 Furlongs, CA-Breds)

Profile: Speed-friendly sprint.

No confirmed need-the-lead types signed on, which could favor a tactical stalker.

#7 Coach Cronin

  • Top career Final Time Rating: 147 (Los Alamitos).
  • 125 last out despite less-than-ideal trip.
  • Two-for-two with jockey Kazushi Kimura.
  • Outside post should allow clean stalking trip.

If Coach Cronin runs back to either of his two best races with Kimura aboard, he’s the most likely winner in the finale.

My Betting Takeaway: Single #7 Coach Cronin.

Pick 6 Ticket Structure ($2 Base)

RaceSelections
Race 41, 6
Race 53, 5
Race 64 (Single)
Race 72 (Single)
Race 84, 9
Race 97 (Single)

Total Cost: $16

This looks like a fairly chalky sequence overall, so I’m not overextending. The strategy leans on three singles — Ballyhooligan, Sharon’s Beach, and Coach Cronin — while protecting in the more competitive legs.
