There’s a $198,741 Pick Six carryover at Santa Anita for Friday, February 27, and with a two-day carryover, the total pool is expected to climb north of seven figures. That’s the kind of opportunity I circle.
I’ve taken a couple of shots at similar carryovers this meet on $16 tickets—cashable efforts with four and five winners. Now I’m looking to land the full six. Here’s how I’m attacking it using the Complete Digest and its projected Fire Numbers, CPR, Fast Figs, and Final Time Ratings.
Race 4 – Maiden Claiming $20,000 (Cal-Breds)
One Mile – Main Track
The mile on dirt has played speed-friendly:
- Front runners: 33% wins
- Pressers: 57% wins
- Midpack: 9.5%
- Deep closers: 0%
With only five horses entered, positioning is critical.
Key Contenders
- #1 Bandelero (7/5 ML) – Drops from tougher company and stretches back out. Inside post fits the profile.
- #2 Bossing Mo (3/1 ML) – Stretching out after sprint efforts. Strong early speed and competitive figures.
- #5 Oswald (5/2 ML) – Best projected Fire Number and CPR, but shipping from Turf Paradise raises class questions.
Race 5 – Allowance Optional Claiming (State-Breds)
One Mile – Turf
Turf mile profile:
- Front/Pressers: 52% combined
- Midpack: 41%
- Deep closers: 5.9%
You don’t want to be too far back.
Primary Play
- #2 Mayacama – Tactical speed, strong Final Time Ratings (125 at Del Mar, 122 at Los Alamitos), and a reliable in-the-money pattern. From the inside, she should secure ideal position.
Race 6 – $10,000 Claiming (N3L)
5½ Furlongs – Dirt
Speed matters at this trip.
Contenders
| Horse | Angle |
|---|---|
| #3 Tiger Fire | Likely speed of the speed |
| #4 Maniae | Strong Fast Fig & Final Time Ratings, competitive at level |
| #1 Coralgableskaylin | Best Fire Number |
Maniae ran against tougher last time and owns solid numbers at this distance. Tiger Fire projects as the main pace threat.
Race 7 – Optional Claiming $80,000
6 Furlongs – Turf
This distance plays more evenly than earlier races.
Contenders
| Horse | Notes |
|---|---|
| #2 Proof He Rides | Pressing style fits profile |
| #6 Cuban Confusion | Extremely consistent; fires fresh |
| #10 Son of a Birch | Strong figs but deep closer |
I’m siding with tactical runners who can secure position before turning for home.
Race 8 – Maiden Special Weight
1 Mile – Dirt
Speed continues to matter at this distance.
The Baffert Pair
| Horse | Notes |
|---|---|
| #2 Winston Ave | 128 Final Time Rating debut; stretching out |
| #3 Cherokee Nation | Two strong mile seconds at Santa Anita |
Winston Ave showed serious ability first out, didn’t get the right setup second time from the rail, and now stretches out again. The upside is significant.
🏇 Bettor’s Edge
Second-time routers stretching out after sprint preps often improve sharply — especially when they’ve already shown a strong figure at a mile configuration.
Race 9 – $50,000 Maiden Claiming
1 Mile – Turf (3-Year-Olds)
Standout
| Horse | Key Numbers |
|---|---|
| #4 Biggiebiggiebiggie | Best Fire (86), CPR (127), Fast Fig (116), Final Time (128) |
He was fastest in the stretch last time (23.6 final fraction), finished second at this level, and now makes his second start at the MC-50k mile level.
He has enough tactical positioning to stay within range — and his late kick stands out.
