Ohio Derby Day at Thistledown features a strong supporting stakes lineup, including the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes for fillies and mares. Scheduled as Race 11 with a post time of 5:35 p.m. ET, the race will be contested at 1 1/8 miles on the main track and has attracted a competitive field of nine runners.
Using speed figures, pace projections, class ratings, and recent form, a few runners stand out as the most likely winners.
Pace and Race Shape
The pace scenario appears favorable for horses with tactical speed. Historical trends at Thistledown show that runners breaking from inside posts with early speed often perform well at this distance.
Standoutsensation appears to have the ideal setup. Breaking from the rail, she possesses enough speed to secure favorable early position and could find herself controlling the race from the outset under Jose Ortiz.
Other runners expected to be involved early include Nerazurri, Low Country Magic, and Peignoir, creating what should be an honest but manageable pace.
Main Contenders
Standoutsensation (#1)
Standoutsensation brings a consistent record at the distance, posting two wins and two runner-up finishes in six starts at 1 1/8 miles.
Her third-place finish in a stakes race at Oaklawn Park last time out was a solid effort, and the rail draw should allow Jose Ortiz to utilize her early speed effectively. If the track favors front-runners, she could prove very difficult to catch.
Nerazurri (#2)
Nerazurri enters this race after facing significantly tougher competition in back-to-back Grade 1 events. While the margins of defeat in those races appear discouraging on paper, the class drop is substantial.
Prior to those Grade 1 starts, Nerazurri posted a strong form cycle with three wins and a runner-up finish in four starts. The addition of Flavien Prat is another positive sign, and a bullet workout at Keeneland on June 12 suggests she is training well heading into this assignment.
With tactical speed and proven class, Nerazurri appears well-positioned to rebound against this field.
Take Charge Omaha (#3)
One of the more intriguing value plays in the field, Take Charge Omaha owns a perfect two-for-two record at the distance.
Although her recent graded-stakes efforts resulted in off-the-board finishes, she now receives meaningful class relief. Her proven stamina and distance record make her a legitimate threat to hit the board and potentially upset at a price.
Tirupati (#8)
Tirupati enters off strong turf performances and owns some of the best overall speed and performance figures in the field. The primary question is whether she can transfer that form back to the dirt.
While she has yet to win on the main track, she has consistently performed well over the surface and could be dangerous if she reproduces her recent numbers. Trainer Jonathan Thomas has had success with runners moving from turf to dirt, adding further appeal.
Other Horses to Consider
Low Country Magic has been competitive at the distance and exits a runner-up finish in the DuPont Stakes. Her tactical speed should keep her involved throughout.
Peignoir deserves respect after narrowly missing in this race a year ago. She owns two wins at the distance and could once again be a factor late.
Candlelight Hours brings outstanding local form, including multiple wins against Ohio-bred company, but faces a much tougher challenge stepping into open stakes competition.
