Fountain of Youth Stakes 2026 Preview

By Jarrod Horak

The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park is one of the most important early-season tests on the Road to Kentucky Derby 2026. Run at 1 1/16 miles for three-year-olds, this $425,000 event offers valuable Derby points and serves as a key stepping stone toward longer and tougher assignments this spring.

Pace & Race Shape

There is legitimate early speed in this field:

  • Napoleon Solo – Fast juvenile with early gas
  • Solitude Dude – Perfect in three one-turn starts, wired the Swale
  • Jackson Hole – Tactical speed from the rail
  • Commandment – Versatile, forwardly placed runner

The presence of multiple pace players suggests an honest tempo. The key question: will someone get loose, or does a stalker sitting just off the lead get first run turning for home?

Contender Breakdown

#1 Jackson Hole (8-1)

Two-for-two and purchased for $1.3 million, Jackson Hole has progressed nicely:

  • Final Time Ratings: 108 → 126
  • Improved pace figures second out
  • Tactical speed from the rail
  • Reunites with John Velazquez

He’ll need another forward move to win, but from the inside post he should save ground and sit a stalking trip. If he jumps forward again, he’s right there late.

Concern: Must improve beyond his 126 Final Time Rating.

#4 Commandment (2-1) – Top Choice

Brad Cox has this colt moving in the right direction:

StartFinal Time RatingFire NumberCPR
Debut986378
2nd12888120
3rd (Mucho Macho Man)14494148

His progression is exactly what I want to see on the Derby trail.

  • Strong tactical speed
  • Stretch-out pattern: 6f → 7f → 1 mile → now two turns
  • Proven over Gulfstream
  • Irad Ortiz Jr. stays aboard

His 144 Final Time Rating already puts him at or near the fastest in this field. The Fire Numbers (speed throughout the race) and CPR (Comprehensive Performance Rating) both show consistent forward development.

Bettor’s Edge

When a three-year-old shows simultaneous improvement in Final Time Rating, Fire Number, and CPR, that’s a powerful pattern. Commandment checks every box.

He looks like the most likely winner.

#6 Chief Wallaby

Only one start, but it was sharp:

  • 129 Final Time Rating in debut
  • Runner-up returned to run well in stakes company
  • Bill Mott trainee with upside

This is a major class test in just his second start and first route attempt. Talent is there, but experience is light.

If he improves off that debut and relaxes stretching out, he’s dangerous.

#10 Solitude Dude

Three-for-three, all around one turn.

  • Final Time Ratings: 125 → 143 → 146
  • Wired the Swale Stakes
  • Flavien Prat aboard

The talent is obvious. The questions:

  • Can he carry speed two turns?
  • Does post 10 force him wide into the first turn?

He’s good enough — but the trip could be tricky.

#7 Napoleon Solo

Brilliant juvenile:

  • 135 Final Time Rating in debut
  • 146 in the Champagne
  • Multiple sharp workouts

Layoff since October. First two-turn attempt. Other speed signed on.

If he fires his Champagne race, he’s a major threat. But at shorter odds, I prefer others given the uncertainties.

Others

  • Bravaro – Perfect trip last time in the Holy Bull but couldn’t finish; distance still a question.
  • Rocky’s Balboa – Florida-bred form; must improve significantly.
  • Talking – Wide trip in the Remsen; needs pace help and major rebound.
  • Bull by the Horns – Numbers too light.
  • Lost Money – Maiden; speed figures too slow.
