Fair Grounds Oaks 2026 Preview & Picks

By Jarrod Horak

The Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks is one of the most important final stepping-stone races on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. Run at 1 1/16 miles at Fair Grounds Race Course on Louisiana Derby Day, the race brings together a competitive group of three-year-old fillies chasing valuable Kentucky Oaks qualifying points.

Using the past performances from Today’s Racing Digest, I’ll break down the field, evaluate the pace scenario, and rank the contenders.

Meet the Field

The Fair Grounds Oaks drew a compact but competitive group of seven fillies. Several arrive from key prep races while others attempt to prove they belong at the graded stakes level.

1. Miss Metoyer

This filly improved dramatically when winning by 13 lengths at Delta Downs last time with a 129 final time rating. However, all of her victories have come at Delta Downs, and stepping up in class while stretching out against graded stakes company is a major challenge.

She could impact the early pace from the rail, but it’s difficult to project her carrying that speed against this caliber of competition.

2. Newtown Pike

This filly has steadily improved for trainer Lindsay Schultz, with final time ratings climbing from 101 to 120 and then 138 in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn.

While the upward trajectory is encouraging, the strength of that Oaklawn prep is questionable. Several runners from the race have yet to return with strong follow-up performances.

3. Maximum Offer

The Kenny McPeek trainee finished a close fourth in the Martha Washington Stakes while earning a 137 final time rating.

The field finished tightly bunched that day, suggesting the race may not have been particularly strong. She is also cross-entered in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park, so her final destination remains uncertain.

4. Luv Your Neighbor

This consistent filly for trainer Mike Stidham has developed a reputation for running second. In fact, she has finished runner-up in her last four starts at Fair Grounds.

She added blinkers in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes and responded with her best effort yet, earning a 132 final time rating while finishing just behind Bella Ballerina.

Horses with tactical speed tend to perform very well at Fair Grounds in two-turn dirt races. Luv Your Neighbor’s ability to stay close to the pace keeps her dangerous in the exotics.

5. Bella Ballerina

The likely favorite enters the Fair Grounds Oaks with a perfect three-for-three record and two stakes victories.

She captured the Golden Rod Stakes last fall and returned this season to win the Rachel Alexandra Stakes. Her numbers are consistent and improving, including matching 134 final time ratings in both stakes wins.

Her Fire Number of 90 in her last two starts highlights her ability to maintain strong speed throughout the race.

Perhaps most importantly, she’s versatile. She can set the pace, stalk just off the leaders, or close from slightly farther back depending on how the race unfolds.

6. Life of Joy

Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Flavien Prat, Life of Joy finished second in the Suncoast Stakes behind early Kentucky Oaks favorite Zany.

There was little pace in that race, which likely compromised her chances. With more early speed expected here, she should get a more favorable setup.

Her 125 final time rating puts her within range of the top contenders, and her back-to-back 94 Fire Numbers suggest she’s capable of sustaining a strong run.

7. Love and Trust

This lightly raced filly has shown promise in just two career starts. After earning a 101 rating in her debut, she improved to 111 when breaking her maiden at Fair Grounds.

She controlled a slow pace in that victory, however, and will need a much faster effort to compete at the graded stakes level.

Pace Outlook

The pace scenario could feature early pressure from Miss Metoyer and possibly Luv Your Neighbor, while Bella Ballerina can be placed anywhere and Life of Joy should stalk the pace.

Fair Grounds often favors horses with tactical positioning in these two-turn dirt races, which gives an advantage to fillies capable of staying close to the early leaders.
