DEL MAR, CA — August 23, 2025 — Saturday’s card at Del Mar Racetrack isn’t just another summer meet. It’s a tactical battleground centered around the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes, a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifier that headlines a card full of pace traps, class droppers, and betting setups worth targeting.
This year’s Pat O’Brien Stakes brings a strong field of 3-year-olds and up at 7 furlongs on dirt, with early speed in abundance and multiple stalkers lined up behind it. But that’s just the main event. Several undercard races offer fig overlays, false favorites, and late pace advantages across both turf and dirt—especially in heat-laden midcard races where flow matters more than class.
Race 9 – Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2)
Distance: 7F
Surface: Dirt
Purse: $250,000
Eligibility: 3YO and up
This race features pure gas up front with Speed Boat Beach, Dr. Venkman, Maymun, and Man O Rose all needing the lead. Bob Baffert‘s Speed Boat Beach has the best back number in the field and enters off a scorching work tab, but Del Mar’s 7F profile has tilted heavily toward stalkers this meet.
That opens the door for Dr. Venkman, who comes in off a class drop and has tactical positioning to sit just behind the duel. Stronghold, a G1 route winner, owns a stalking sprint profile and has worked smartly for this. Awesome Rhythm remains in razor form with three straight wins and figures as the most logical closer.
This is a classic Del Mar sprint meltdown scenario. If the early burners cook each other, Stronghold or Awesome Rhythm could cash the biggest checks.
Races 1–4: Early Pace Puzzles and Overlay Plays
Race 1: Lone speed type Biggiebiggiebiggie could walk on the front, but both Baffert colts Provenance and Plutarch have been working with intent and carry strong win profiles. Look for Hernandez to try and trip out just off the lead.
Race 2: Claimer with an obvious duel brewing between One Mor Story and Let Seamus Go, both of whom have quit late before. Spearfish and Mischiefs Causeway sit behind with figs to take advantage.
Race 3: Dirt route with two speed types—Great King (FR) and Ready to Pounce—but Contrary Chieftain and Fireman Dan have figs that suggest they’ll be rolling late if the pace implodes.
Race 4: Turf sprint with pace from all directions. Sensational Z Z is dangerous speed, but Shangrilama (IRE) owns the back-class and Diamond Bar Gal recorded the fastest turf stretch time (:11.0) on the card.
Races 5–7: Midcard Dirt Pressure and Trip Chaos
Race 5: Pace falls apart almost every time Make It a Large runs, and the track profile won’t help him hold. Bazooka Charlie cuts back and fits the route-to-sprint pattern perfectly. Smoothwhskygoindwn closed into a collapsing pace last out and could do it again.
Race 6: Slow turf route where Big Bill owns both positional and figure edges. Closers like Fight Back and Bonneville Jim need help, but may hit the super if the leader idles.
Race 7: Cal-bred dirt route. Mr. Disrespectful should control things early, but if Canani or The Gypsy Cowboy force him early, it becomes a stalker’s race. Sogno Di Vino plots well for an off-the-pace trip.
Race 8 – Turf Sprint Setup
With Tejon Pass, Jerry’s Spirit, and For All Mankind all gunning early, this race should collapse late. Proof He Rides and Yellow Card both post turf sprint stretch times under :11.1 and are proven over the course. Patron d’Oro looms as a third-off-the-layoff play with back-class and finishing power.
Race 10 – Turf Mile for Fillies
Final race of the day offers value. Hello Kid O Kid O and Lavender Love set the early pace, but Shezmisbehaving owns the fastest closer figure on the card (:22.9). If the front-runners go too quick, Quantum Innergy and Guiltyofhavingfun both have the figs and trip patterns to cash verticals.
Strategy Snapshot
- Dirt Sprint Bias: Early speed wins more often under 6.5F, but not at 7F. Expect races like Race 9 to tilt toward second-flight stalkers.
- Turf Sprint Profile: Closers under :11.2 on stretch time matter, especially in turf sprints with at least 3 confirmed burners.
- Multi-Race Bets: The Race 6–10 sequence includes multiple volatile pace setups. Use at least one off-the-pace type in each leg where 3+ horses need the lead.
