Bango Stakes 2026 Preview at Churchill Downs

By Jarrod Horak

The Grade 3 Bango Stakes brings together a solid group of older sprinters at Churchill Downs on Saturday, and several runners enter in sharp form. While proven stakes performers such as Cornucopian and Dr. Venkman command respect, the improving Built appears poised to continue his strong transition into a sprint specialist.

Race Overview

The pace should be honest from the outset with Cornucopian and Harrodsburg expected to show early speed. Built, breaking from the outside post, figures to enjoy a stalking trip under Irad Ortiz Jr., while Dr. Venkman and Extra Anejo should settle just behind the leaders.

Main Contenders

Cornucopian (#2)

Bob Baffert’s Cornucopian remains one of the most accomplished sprinters in the field. He has won three of four starts this season, including Grade 3 victories in the San Carlos Stakes and the Aristides at Churchill Downs on May 30.

His fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes on May 2 can be forgiven against tougher competition. He owns some of the strongest recent speed figures in the race and should secure a forward position throughout beneath Flavien Prat.

If he reproduces either of his graded-stakes-winning efforts from this season, he will be a major factor from start to finish.

Extra Anejo (#5)

Extra Anejo could be the value horse underneath in vertical wagers.

The Steve Asmussen trainee made his first start in almost nine months on May 21 and should move forward in his second start of the year. He owns prior graded stakes success and has proven capable of handling the Churchill Downs surface.

While he may need a career-best effort to win, improvement is expected and a trifecta finish is well within reach.

Dr. Venkman (#6)

Class is not an issue for Dr. Venkman.

The Mark Glatt trainee exits a third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and was runner-up in this race last year when it was contested as the Kelly’s Landing Stakes. His consistency in dirt sprints has been remarkable, compiling three wins, five seconds, and a third from ten starts.

The question is fitness. Saturday marks his first start since November 2025, and bettors must decide whether he is ready to fire his best shot off the lengthy layoff.

Built (#7)

Built enters this race in excellent form after winning a seven-furlong optional claimer at Churchill Downs by four lengths. Since returning to sprint races, he has posted three wins and a third-place finish in his last four dirt sprints on fast tracks.

After competing on the Kentucky Derby trail earlier in his career, the son of Hard Spun has found his niche around one turn. His recent speed figures fit comfortably with this group, and his outside draw should allow Irad Ortiz, Jr. to secure a clean stalking trip behind the speed.

Trainer Wayne Catalano has enjoyed solid recent success, and Built appears capable of taking the next step back into graded stakes company.

Other Entrants

U Devil You (#1) enters off a disappointing fifth-place finish as the favorite and now faces tougher competition while shortening up slightly in distance.

Harrodsburg (#3) exits a wire-to-wire victory over optional claiming company but will need to show he can transfer that form to graded stakes company against stronger pace pressure.

Gold Sweep (#4) finished third behind Cornucopian in his latest outing and must find additional improvement to turn the tables. While he may need a career-best effort to win, improvement is expected.
