Saratoga 2023: Owners to watch

The 2023 Saratoga meet is right around the corner and owners love to have their picture taken at the prestigious boutique meeting in Upstate New York. Klavarich Stables seemingly has a hammerlock on the leading owner title. They had the most wins from 2015-22.

2022 Leading Owners (wins): Klaravich Stables (16), Peter M. Brant (7), Winchell Thoroughbreds (6), Rigney Racing (6), Michael Dubb (5), Reeves Thoroughbred Racing (5), Three Diamonds Farm (5)
Klaravich showed the way by a large margin with starters (77) and wins (16) last year. Winchell Thoroughbreds was an impressive 6-for-8, and Rigney Racing was a strong 6-for-13.
2021 Leading Owners (wins): Klaravich Stables (21), Three Diamonds Farm (9), Godophin (6), Peter M. Brant (6), Calumet Farm (5), Repole Stable (5)
Klaravich dominated with 21 wins from 65 starters. Three Diamonds was second in starters (58) and wins (9). Godolphin had a big meet with a 6-for-23 record.
2022 Top Money Earning Owners (8 or more starts): Klaravich Stables ($1,847,391), Godolphin ($1,643,006), Winchell Thoroughbreds ($1,467,200), Peter M. Brant ($1,421,725), Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable ($493,334)
Epicenter (Winchell Thoroughbreds) was responsible for $1 million of their $1,467,200 earnings. Godolphin was just 3-for-25 and Nations Pride (IRE) and With the Moonlight (IRE), both trained by Charles Appleby, picked up a combined $950k. Cody’s Wish was their other stakes winner and he landed $320k for his victory in the Forego.
2021 Top Money Earning Owners (8 or more starts): Godolphin ($2,047,805), Klaravich Stables ($1,545,163), Three Diamonds Farm ($994,578), Juddmonte ($719,010), Peter Brant ($710,523)
Godolphin had a giant meet on the earnings side in 2021. Essential Quality (Jim Dandy-Travers, $1 million) was the big earner for this outfit.
2022 Highest In the Money Percentage (8 or more starts): Winchell Thoroughbreds (88%), Reeves Thoroughbreds (78%), Peter Brant (68%), Albert Fried Jr. (67%), Michael Dubb (61%)
Winchell made the most of 8 starters (6 wins and a second). Reeves Thoroughbreds had 9 starters with five wins, a second and a third. Peter Brant had the third most starters (34) and 23 finished in the Top 3.
2021 Highest In the Money Percentage (8 or more starts): Winchell Stables (73%), Stonestreet Stables (67%), Joe Politi (67%), Godolphin (65%), Mr. Amore Stable (64%)
Godolphin had 15 Top 3 finishers from 23 starters. The other four owners on this list had 9 or 11 starters.
Top 3 Owners to Watch at Saratoga in 2023
Godolphin: Cody’s Wish is back for more after winning the Grade 1 Forego last year. He is targeting the Whitney (G1). They also have Matareya, Pretty Mischievous, Proxy, and Wet Paint. It sure looks like they sitting on another $1 million or more in earnings at the Spa.
Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable: They teamed up to finish fifth on the earnings list last year with a little less than half a million. They co-own 2023 Grade 1 winners Up to the Mark and Forte, and they might have a lucrative summer in New York.
Stonestreet Stables: In 2021, they had a strong 67% “in the money” percentage. They own some decent runners this year including Clairiere, Pauline’s Pearl, and Love Reigns, and I can see this outfit having a productive meet at the Spa.
