Lots of stakes action this week starting on Friday with the Real Good Deal stakes at 7 furlongs on the main track for Cal bred sophomores. There is plenty of speed nominated to this race with the very fast Kangaroo Court joined by the almost as fast Bus Buzz. Peter Miller’s Giver Not a Taker may be sitting in the cat bird seat.
Saturday has two stakes led by the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch stakes for older fillies and mares at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track. There were 12 nominated for this race and Baffert had five of them led by Adare Manor, Eda, and Fun to Dream. Phil D’Amato has a pair in Desert Dawn and Elm Drive while Richard Mandella has Window Shopping. This is the 53rd running of the Hirsch. Also on Saturday is another Cal bred race, this time for older runners on the turf in the California Dreamin’ stakes. 14 horses are nominated for this race led by Kings River Knight and Lovesick Blues.
On Sunday there are two more stakes headed up by the Grade 3 La Jolla stakes for sophomores on the grass and the first two year old stake of the meet, the CTBA for Cal bred fillies. Maltese Falcon heads up the field of 11 nominations for the 83rd running of the La Jolla, while trainer Jeff Bonde has 3 recent maiden winners looking to contest five and a half furlongs on the main track in the CTBA stakes.
