Princess Midnight: Was Best Today In First Start On Turf

Four year old Runhappy filly for Carla Gaines, coming off a 15 month layoff, was in for a maiden special weight event for older fillies and mares in Sunday’s opener at ¾ on the green. Off at 8/1 in a field of 7 under J.J., she broke OK from the 2 hole and the rider kept her on the fence most of the way. She was in sixth down the back side about five off the leaders. J.J. kept her on the fence turning for home, then angled out at 1/16 pole, where she had to cross over five lanes, then finished with a flourish and was beaten ¾ by the perfect tripper favorite. “Lovin” was best today and she’s a soon winner, especially if J.J. rides her back. This was her 1st start on the turf and she took to it very effectively.
