Panthera’s Fate: Best in Field But Held Back By Jockey Can Improve

Three year old gelding for Phil D’Amato made his debut on Saturday in a Cal bred maiden special weight event at ¾ on the lawn for 3 and up. Off at 8/1 in a full field of 12 runners, this son of the good stallion Smiling Tiger had a nightmare trip. He was left at the gate at the start, was away dead last, and quickly fell 10 off the pace. Ricky Gonzalez took him to the fence and he was crying for run with nowhere to go down the back side and checked at least 3 times before the ¼ pole. The jock kept him on the fence down the lane and was still behind a wall of horses with nowhere to run. The jock was holding him for the entire length of the stretch and he was crying out for run. He finished sixth but was beaten four at the wire and I’m convinced he was far and away the best horse in this field. Even on the gallop out well past the wire, he had nowhere to run. He trained well coming into the race and he can run. Look for a rider change for start #2. D’Amato knows how to win turf sprints, but the 5/8 at Del Mar may be too short for him, so he may show up at a mile.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Panthera’s Fate was cabable of.  We expected that if Panthera’s Fate gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Panthera’s Fate performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Panthera’s Fate last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Panthera’s Fate next start.  If Panthera’s Fate appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Panthera’s Fate will dominate the race.

Helpful Tip:  So that it’s easy for you to compare a horse’s past performance, Today’s Racing Digest’s Performance Figures for upcoming races are based on how we expect the horse to perform in that race regardless of any changes in race conditions.  Learn More:
