Flying Drummer: Likely Needed This One and Can Improve

Four year old colt for Bob Baffert, who had been away from the races for 17 months, found himself in a 1st allowance condition on Saturday for older runners at a mile on the main. Off at 5/2 in a field of 9, he bobbled slightly at the start, but recovered nicely under J.J. and dueled for the lead into the clubhouse turn. He had a half on the field down the back side, lost the lead at the 3/8 pole, then took it back at the top of the lane, opened up two momentarily, then lost a heartbreaker right at the wire by a neck. It was another four back to the third horse. If given enough time after this hard used race, he can knock out this condition easily as the talent is there. It’s awfully hard to win going long after such a long layoff, even for Baffert.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Flying Drummer was cabable of.  We expected that if Flying Drummer gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Flying Drummer performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Flying Drummer last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Flying Drummer next start.  If Flying Drummer appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Flying Drummer will dominate the race.
