Calm Sea: Runner Who Doesn’t Need The Lead To Win

Four year old gelding for George Papaprodromou tried the first allowance condition at a mile on the turf for open runners on Saturday in the final race on the program. Off a t 10/1 in a full field of 12 runners, he battled for the lead right from the get go from his rail post position, but was pressed every step of the way through quick fractions of 22.46 and 46.45. He fought off his opponents under Umberto Rispoli, actually opened up a length and a half lead at the 1/8 pole, but finally succumbed to the late runners in the closing yards. He finished third beaten just a length at the wire in a very game performance. This son of Mendelssohn out of a Stormy Atlantic mare is a runner and is easily good enough to knock out this condition, plus he doesn’t need the lead to win. He is good anywhere from 8 to 9 furlongs as long as they keep him on the turf, and he’s a soon winner for an underrated barn.
