The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint was introduced at Monmouth Park in 2007 and Maryfield was the initial winner for trainer Doug O’Neill. This race has been held at Santa Anita seven times, and the 2023 renewal will be held at the Great Race Place on Saturday, Nov. 4. They will be traveling seven panels on the main track.

Recent BC Filly & Mare Sprint Results

Goodnight Olive stalked and scored from post 8 as the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint favorite in 2022. She was exiting a victory in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga.

Ce Ce won this race in 2021 as my value top choice and she was exiting a victory in the Chillingworth (G3) at Santa Anita.

Sophomore fillies won three straight editions of this race from 2018-2020 (Shamrock Rose, Covfefe, Gamine). Bar of Gold upset the 2017 Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar and she was turning back after running 6th in the Grade 1 Spinster at 1 1/8 miles.

Finest City defeated Wavell Avenue in the 2016 Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita and was exiting a place finish in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee at a mile and an eighth on turf. Wavell Avenue won the 2015 Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland and she was exiting a runner-up finish in the Gallant Bloom (G2).

The Santa Anita Years

All seven winners of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita were exiting sharp efforts, and the last six showed early speed or stalked the pace. Covfefe flashed speed from the rail, and the five Santa Anita winners before her were forwardly placed from middle to outer posts.

The chart below shows all 7 winners of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita, and it includes winning riders, trainers, post positions, running styles, win payoffs, and final preps.

Trainers to Watch

Chad Brown saddled two Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winners (Wavell Avenue, Goodnight Olive).

Jockeys to Watch

Irad Ortiz Jr. booted home the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint three times (Bar of Gold, Shamrock Rose, Goodnight Olive).

Joel Rosario guided home Wavell Avenue in 2015 and Covfefe in 2019.

BC Filly & Mare Sprint Trends

Groupie Doll is the lone repeat winner of this race. Those victories were at Santa Anita Park in 2012-13. Last year’s Filly & Mare Sprint winner Goodnight Olive is expected to ship to Santa Anita for an attempted title defense in 2023.

As stated above, a 3-year-old filly can win this race, but that might be a tall order this year with the likes of Echo Zulu and Goodnight Olive in the field.

Horses with early-pressing speed and outer posts frequently perform well in extended sprints.
