Maltese Falcon (IRE): Rough Trip Down The Lane And Stuck On Rail Look For Improvement

Three year old gelding for Len Powell was in for 9 furlongs on the turf in this maiden special weight event in the opener on Monday and had a very rough trip down the lane. Off at 4/1 in a field of 8, and getting plenty of play early on, he was well meant today as he was covered up early by Berrios and was sixth into the clubhouse turn. The jock kept him on the rail throughout and he was loaded turning into the lane, but had nowhere to go the entire length of the stretch. When you try to come through on the rail in turf racing, lots of bad things generally happen. Sure, it’s the shortest way home, but most horses don’t like racing on the inside, the turf is usually not quite as firm on the inside, and it’s way too easy to get stopped. All three happened to “Falcon” as he was the best horse in the field and finished third beaten two at the wire. This Irish bred has quality and will win soon.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Maltese Falcon (IRE) was cabable of.  We expected that if Maltese Falcon (IRE) gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Maltese Falcon (IRE) performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Maltese Falcon (IRE) last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Maltese Falcon (IRE) next start.  If Maltese Falcon (IRE) appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Maltese Falcon (IRE) will dominate the race.
