Bullard: Kicked In With Late Solid Burst to Beat J.J. On the Favorite

Two year old colt for Mike McCarthy made his debut in Sunday’s opener at ¾ on the main for maiden special weights. Off at 3/1 in a field of 7 he broke slowly from the five hole and was last early on 7 lengths back of the odds on leader. He started to make up ground at the 3/8 pole and was up to 2nd by the top of the stretch, but the leader had opened up four by then and looked long gone. For one of the few times, J.J. fell asleep on the favorite, thought he had the race won, when Bullard kicked it in with a solid late burst and won going away by a length and a half at the wire. It was an impressive performance by this son of Gun Runner who they paid $675K at the Keeneland yearling sale. When it’s all said and done, he just might be worth all that money.
