The weather improved on the first Saturday in May and the main track was fast for the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Mystik Dan, breaking from post 3, worked out a dream inside stalking trip, got a clear lead in the stretch, and held on by a desperate nose over Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Brian Hernandez Jr. rode the winner for Ken McPeek, and he paid $39.22. The final time was 2:03.34.
