Soul of Midnight: Won by 8 Lengths Going Away at The Wire

Three year old gelding for Dean Pederson, a Turfdom Best Bet on the day, faced 13 others in a maiden claimer for sophomore Cal breds at ¾ on the main Friday. He broke running from the gate under Cedillo and had one length on this large field by the half mile pole, through moderate fractions of 22.50 and 45.76 for the half. He increased his margin to two by the 3/8 pole, four and the 1/8 pole, and cruised on home much the best to win by 8 going away at the wire as the 8/5 choice. No one reached in and took this son of Straight Fire so Pederson will probably try the non winners two starter allowance race. This race was big enough so he may even try open company.
