Santa Ana Analysis

#2 Mahina (8-1) almost always finishes in the top three at Santa Anita (10 4-3-2). She stalked the pace and finished a nose behind Mrs. Astor in the Robert Frankel (G3) at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Dec. 27, and rallied for the place in the Grade 3 Megahertz at one mile on turf on Feb. 1 (show finisher Liguria won Grade 2 Buena Vista on March 1). Profitable turf rider Hector Berrios got reacquainted with the late runner last time and she should offer wagering value. She was gaining ground late in her last two nine panel attempts and might enjoy the added furlong of this race.
#8 Kathynmarissa (1-1) fired trifecta shots in all seven turf starts (7 3-2-2). She won the Dueling Grounds Oaks on Sept. 11 and exits a runner-up finish at this course and distance in the Grade 1 American Oaks. Her winning rider Frankie Dettori chose her over #3 Mrs. Astor (5-2). The latter won her last two graded turf routes in the Grade 3 Red Carpet (11T) and Grade 3 Robert Frankel (9T). Recently hot rider Umberto Rispoli takes the call and he is 2-for-8 with Jonathan Thomas.
