Four year old colt for John Shirreffs finally made it to the races on Saturday in a maiden special weight event at 7/8 on the main. Off at 7/1 in a “salty” field of 7, he broke a step slow from the rail slot, then was rushed up to contend for the lead by the half mile pole. He never got a breather through quick fractions of 22.04 and 44.65 for the half, gamely held his position until the 1/8 pole, and then was wrapped up by the rider. He finished 5th beaten about 8 at the wire, but he did all the dirty work in this race and all in all, it was a fine try for his debut from a difficult post. He’ll be much tighter for start #2 and if he can get a bit shorter distance with a better post, he’ll be tough. They paid $1.1 million for this son of Quality Road and Shirreffs says he’s a runner.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Theismann was cabable of. We expected that if Theismann gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Theismann performance figures. Use the performance figures earned in Theismann last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Theismann next start. If Theismann appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Theismann will dominate the race.
