Summer Lake: Won by 5 With Newly Shown Early Speed

Five year old mare for Carla Gaines, off since late November, tried the first allowance condition for Cal breds in the opener on Saturday at six and a half down the hill for older fillies and mares. Off at 5/1 in a field of 8, she broke running under Frankie Dettori and quickly grabbed the lead. She had two on the field coming down the hill yet was still under a snug hold. She wasn’t asked to run until the top of the lane, then quickly opened up five by the 1/8 pole. She cruised on in to win by five at the wire and beat some pretty decent runners in the process. She had never shown this much early speed in the past so the time off obviously did her some good. She can get two turns as well. Up the ladder for this daughter of Lakerville.
