Quick Brown Fox: May be Another Future Star for Spendthrift Farm

This daughter of Triple Crown winner Justify and the first foal of Grade 1 winner Bast, made her debut on Sunday for the Richard Mandella connections under hot riding Frankie Dettori. Off as the 4/5 choice in this 7 furlong adventure on the main track, she was unlucky to draw the rail, but still broke well and made the running down on the inside the entire trip. She dueled from the rail through moderate fractions of 22.58 and 45.70 for the half, put away the other speed at the top of the lane, then dug in gamely when headed by an off the pace runner late. Having to run the entire trip under stress finally took its toll in the closing strides and she lost by a neck to a perfect tripper from off the pace. This filly is the “goods” and if Mandella can keep her in one piece, she may be another future star for Spendthrift Farm.
