Mc Vay: Much Improved Running Down Leader at 1/8 Pole

Three year old colt for John Shirreffs made start #2 in Saturday’s opener as they sprinted on the main at six and a half in a race for sophomores. Off at 9/1 in a salty field of 8, he broke a tad slow under Berrios, but was quickly up and in contention by the half mile pole. He was third at the 3/8 pole while between horses and 3 back of the odds on leader. He gamely made a run at the leader at the 1/8 pole, but was quickly outmatched and had to settle for second, and it was five back to the third horse. It was a much improved effort over his debut and this expensive son of Constitution will be a soon winner for the ever patient Shirreffs barn. He has the look of a colt that wants two turns and they may stretch him out next time.
