Maria Tallchief: Broke A Step Slow But Opened at 1/8 Galloping Out Strong Past Finish Wanting 2 Turns

Three year old filly for Phil D’Amato made start #2 on Saturday in a maiden special weight event at ¾ on the turf for Cal breds. Off at 5/1 in a field of 11, she broke a step slow under Frey and was five back early down the back side. She has some natural speed and was quickly up to third, but was forced to check at the 3/8 pole when a horse came over on her and she lost momentum. She re-rallied on the fence turning for home looking for a seam to get through. One finally opened at the 1/8 pole but the favorite had clear sailing on the outside, got the jump on Maria, and she was second beaten two and a half at the wire. She galloped out strong past the wire and really looks like a filly that wants two turns. Either way she’s a soon winner for D’Amato if and when she can get a clean trip.
