Mancuso: D’Amato Doesn’t Have Debut Runners Fully Cranked, Tighter in 2nd Start

Two year old filly for Phil D’Amato made her debut on Sunday in a maiden special weight at five and a half on the main. Off at 7/1 in a field of six, she veered in at the start to lose a little ground, then started running under Fresu. The heavy Baffert favorite opened up three quickly on the field with a first quarter in 21.37 and Mancuso was five back at the half mile. But the favorite went too fast too early in her debut and came back to the field at the top of the lane. Mancuso was between horses throughout and never got a breather, but fought gamely down the lane with the winner on her outside. She lost by a head and ran a winning race. D’Amato doesn’t have his debut runners fully cranked and likes to give them a race, so she should be much tighter for start #2. She’s a soon winner for a barn that is starting to heat up.
