Lady Monclaire: Best Filly Today but Beaten By 3 at Wire

Three year old filly for Richard Baltas didn’t get the best of rides from Flavien Prat as she made start #2 in Sundays fifth, a six furlong sprint on the turf for sophomore Cal breds. Off as the 8/5 choice in a field of 7, she broke OK from the 2 hole, but Prat had her under a tight hold while she was dying to do some running. Prat ran her up on a horse’s heels at the ½ mile pole and had to check her, then was forced to check again at the 3/8 pole for the same maneuver. This time she got shuffled back to 4th and never could catch the runaway wire to wire leader. She did run second but was beaten three at the wire and was probably the best filly today. She did add blinkers and Lasix today so give her another chance with sophomores on the grass. Baltas might make a rider switch next time out.
