Cathal (IRE): Berrios Miss Rode Cathal and Ran Into Trouble Losing By 2 To an Inferior Horse

Four year old colt for John Sadler, who has been running in graded stakes for sophomores, tried the 2nd allowance condition Sunday at 9 furlongs on the turf for older runners. Off at 3/1 in a field of 9, Berrios took him over to the fence and kept him well off the pace into the clubhouse turn. He settled in the rear down the back side, about 10 off the pace, and then started to move at the ¼ pole. Berrios decided to keep him on the fence while Rispoli, who was right next to him at this point, swung to the outside. Cathal encountered plenty of trouble from the 1/8 pole to the 1/16 and had nowhere to go. Rispoli had clear sailing on the outside and out finished Berrios on Cathal by two at the wire. Cathal is a better horse than Sea Singer is, who Rispoli rode, but the latter out rode Berrios at a critical part of the race. When you’re on the best horse, why try and get cute. Take the overland route and stay out of trouble. Some riders will never learn and Berrios is normally a pretty fair turf rider. Look for Cathal to knock out this condition with a better ride next time.
