Bougie Like: Dug In The Stretch But Beat By a Neck with 3rd Two Lengths Behind

Four year old filly for Doug O’Neill made just the 2nd start of her career and 1st time around two turns along with the 1st time on the grass in Saturday’s opener. She passed all the tests very well in this Cal bred maiden event at a mile on the turf for older runners. Off at 7/1 in a field of 9 under Maldonado, she sped to the early lead from the 2 hole, had one length on the field into the clubhouse turn and down the back side. She got competition at the top of the stretch, but she dug in gamely in a long stretch drive and got beat a neck at the wire, it was another two back to the third horse. She got very little out of her sprint debut but this daughter of California Chrome can run. Her dam’s sire is Tribal Rule and he has been a terrific brood mare sire here in the state of California. “Bougie” is sitting on a win, and as long as O’Neill keeps her in the Cal bred ranks for now, she will get it.
