Birth of Cool: Checked Twice and Should Improve In Next Start

Four year old gelding for Craig Dollase, who he just acquired off the claim four weeks ago, was well intended in this $20,000 claimer non winners of 3 at a mile on the turf for older runners in Saturday’s finale. Off at 7/5 in a field of 10 with top turf rider Umberto Rispoli in the irons, he was covered up early from the 7 hole and was dead last on purpose into the clubhouse turn. He was a good 11 lengths back at the half mile pole, made some headway on the far turn, then checked badly at the ¼ pole when he ran up on a horse’s heels and almost went down. Rispoli gathered him up but had nowhere to go on the fence, swung out for room behind a wall of horses, then checked hard again at the 1/16 pole and nearly went down again. The jock wrapped up on him and he finished sixth with a ton of horse for the last 3 furlongs. Even the good riders get their mounts in trouble and on this tight turf course, there is little margin for error. This gelding can run some and he should knock out this condition in the near future. He should get another chance before December 3rd.
