Barnes: Put Other Speed Away Cruising To Win by Six

Three year old colt for Bob Baffert made start #2 in the Grade 2 San Vicente stakes at 7/8 on the main track for newly turned sophomores. Off as the co-favorite at even money with Bullard, he came out running under J.J. and dueled for the early lead under moderate fractions of 22.65 and 45.10 for the half. Approaching the ¼ pole, Barnes put the other speed away, quickly opened up two on the field, then cruised on home to win by six under a hand ride. It was an impressive performance for this $3.2 million purchase and he is now two for two in his brief career. The San Vicente has produced many a Santa Anita Derby winner in the past and may very well do so again in 2025. Barnes is named for Baffert’s loyal assistant Jimmy Barnes and looks to have a very bright future. $3.2 million is a lot to pay for a race horse, but it looks like this son of the great sire Into Mischief might be worth the money.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Barnes was cabable of.  We expected that if Barnes gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Barnes performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Barnes last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Barnes next start.  If Barnes appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Barnes will dominate the race.
