This is my first in a series of articles previewing all 14 Breeders’ Cup 2023 races. This is the sixth running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and the 2023 renewal will be held at Santa Anita Park on Friday, Nov. 3. They will be dashing an abbreviated five panels on the turf course.
Wesley Ward is the trainer to watch in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. He won this race with Four Wheel Drive in 2019, Golden Pal in 2020, and filly Twilight Gleaming in 2021, and was second with filly Chelsea Cloisters in 2018. Irad Ortiz Jr. booted home all three of Ward’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winners.
Overseas invader Mischief Magic (IRE) won the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint race in 2022 for Charles Appleby and Godolphin. Jockey William Buick guided him home, and he was exiting a fourth at Newmarket. Dramatised (IRE), a filly shipping from York, completed the exacta, and Private Creed finished third for trainer Steve Asmussen. Love Reigns (IRE) was the beaten favorite for Wesley Ward.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint was previously held at Santa Anita in 2019. The aforementioned Four Wheel Drive was the winner, and the son of American Pharoah was exiting a victory in the Futurity (G3) at Belmont Park.
The BC Juvenile Turf Sprint was a race for the U.S.-based runners prior to last year. Wesley Ward is the exception. He is known for sending some of his better early season juveniles to Ascot in the spring, and he did just that with two of his winners (Twilight Gleaming, Golden Pal).
