The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies dates all the way back to the first Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park in 1984. The 2023 renewal will be held at Santa Anita Park on Friday, Nov. 3, and they will be traveling 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
Recent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Results
Wonder Wheel rallied from the back of the pack to win this race in 2022 for Tyler Gaffalione and Mark Casse. She paid $15 and was exiting a front running victory in the Grade 1 Alcibiades.
Echo Zulu did not disappoint as the chalk in the 2021 renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies for Steve Asmussen. She was 3-for-3 heading into this event including back-to-back Grade 1 wins in the Spinaway and Frizette.
Vequist was the 2020 winner at Keeneland and she was first in the Spinaway (G1) and second in the Frizette (G1) prior to the Breeders’ Cup.
British Idiom captured the 2019 Juvenile Fillies for Brad Cox and she was exiting a win in the Grade 1 Alcibiades.
Jaywalk took the 2018 renewal of this event and she was exiting a victory in the Frizette (G1).
Caledonia Road pulled off an upset victory from off the pace in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar for Ralph Nicks and Mike Smith, and her final prep was a second in the Frizette (G1) at Belmont.
Champagne Room was the 2016 winner and she was exiting a fourth place finish in the Chandelier (G1).
This race was run at Keeneland in 2015 and the winner was California shipper Songbird. She was 3-for-3 prior to the Cup with Grade 1 wins in the Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier.
The Santa Anita Years
This Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies has been held at Santa Anita ten times. Brave Raj was the first winner at the Great Race Place in 1986. Phone Chatter (1993), Halfbridled (2003), Stardom Bound (2008), She Be Wild (2009), Beholder (2012), Ria Antonia (2013), Take Charge Brandi (2014), Champagne Room (2016), and British Idiom (2019) also won this race at Santa Anita Park.

The Oak Leaf shows up three times, and that Santa Anita race has been renamed the Chandelier. Five of the ten winners had their final prep at Santa Anita including champion Beholder, dam of 2023 BC Juvenile Fillies contender Tamara.

Javier Castellano guided home two winners at Santa Anita (British Idiom, Ria Antonia).
Joel Rosario has booted home the winner of this race in three of the last five years (Echo Zulu, Jaywalk, Vequist).
Mike Smith rode the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies three times (Caledonia Road, Songbird, Stardom Bound).
John Velazquez piloted a pair of winners in this race (Caressing, Storm Flag Flying).
Trainers to Watch
Steve Asmussen saddled My Miss Aurelia to victory in 2011, and he struck again with Echo Zulu in 2021.
Bob Baffert has surprisingly only won this race twice (Indian Blessing, Silverbulletday).
D. Wayne Lukas is still very much active in this game, and he saddled the winner of this race a record six times including Take Charge Brandi at Santa Anita in 2014.
Richard Mandella saddled the winner of this race three times at Santa Anita (Beholder, Halfbridled, Phone Chatter), and he has likely favorite Tamara in 2023.
