There is a chance of rain for each of the four days of the Belmont Stakes Festival at Saratoga. The rain is mostly scattered and the forecast for Saturday is mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain. If the track is wet, which horses will handle the footing?
Seize the Grey won the Preakness Stakes in the mud and also handled a wet track at Saratoga last summer, so he can run on anything. He is probably the one to catch from the inside post.
Mystik Dan romped in the mud in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on Feb. 3, and was second in a muddy renewal of the Preakness on May 18. He figures to stalk the pace under Brian Hernandez Jr.
Dornoch was second to Seize the Grey in a local maiden sprint in the slop last summer, and beat Sierra Leone by a nose in the mud at Aqueduct in the Remsen Stakes last year. He should impact the pace.
Finally, morning line favorite Sierra Leone was a close second in the mud in the Remsen, and added blinkers and rallied for the win in the slop at Fair Grounds in the Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 17. He is the best closer in the field.
