El Potente: Won By 4 While Close With A Quick Pace for 2 Turns on a Tough Turf Course

This six year old full horse for Dan Blacker couldn’t be any sharper than he is right now as he won the Grade 3 Thunder Road stakes Saturday at a mile on the turf for older runners in 1:32.39 by four widening lengths. After Seal Team, who was the 8/5 favorite broke through the gate, “Potente” then became the 3/2 choice in this field of 9 and he broke sharply under Berrios and tracked the leader through quick fractions of 22.63 and 46.17 for the half, never being more than two lengths off the lead. He went to the lead on his own at the ¼ pole, then was roused by the jock at the 1/8 pole, and pulled away from a strong field to win by four, pretty much under a hand ride. This was his first ever stakes race and he just went through his 1st and 2nd allowance conditions this year. He has now won six races from just 14 starts and the sky’s the limit. It’s pretty hard to win on this turf course going two turns that close to that quick of a pace, and then win by four.
