Lady Gregory: Bottled and checked for 4th but galloped past winner past wire could improve with cleaner trip

Six year old mare for Jeff Mullins tried the first allowance condition for Cal breds at six and a half on the turf for older runners on Friday. Off as the even money favorite in a field of 7, she broke well under Berrios and sat the perfect trip down the back side in 4th just behind three dueling leaders. But Berrios kept her on the fence turning for home, hoping that a seam would develop, but it never did. He was loaded with horse and was bottled up for a full furlong, checked sharply at the 1/8 pole, and finished a well beaten fourth. She actually galloped by everyone including the winner past the wire. When you are on the best horse, forget about saving ground on the turf, get to the outside where it’s clear, and you will win the race. I know, that’s easier said than done sometimes and these are split second decisions. This is the second straight unlucky race for “Gregory” and maybe, just maybe, the third time will be the charm.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Lady Gregory was cabable of.  We expected that if Lady Gregory gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Lady Gregory performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Lady Gregory last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Lady Gregory next start.  If Lady Gregory appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Lady Gregory will dominate the race.
