Ridegold: Getting To the Favorite Late in this Strong Performance

Three year old filly for Craig Lewis made her debut on Thursday in a maiden special weight event for Cal breds at five and a half on the main track for soph fillies. Off at 5/2 in a field of 10 off some very slow works, the word was out on this filly that she could run some. She broke well from the two hole and was third down the back side, but the favorite in the race broke like a rocket and was 8 in front of the field by the 3/8 pole in a sizzling first quarter in 21.81 on a track that was not playing all that fast. Ridegold moved up to second by the ¼ pole but was still five back at the top of the lane. She closed resolutely under J.J. along the fence and was getting to the favorite late but the wire came up too quick and she lost by a half length. This was a bit of a mirage as the leader was actually stopping very late in this race which made Ridegold’s late gain more impressive than it really was. Nonetheless, it was a strong performance for the runner up off those awfully slow morning drills. She’s a soon winner for a barn that does much better with 2nd time starters than debut runners.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Ridegold was cabable of.  We expected that if Ridegold gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Ridegold performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Ridegold last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Ridegold next start.  If Ridegold appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Ridegold will dominate the race.
