Stay On the Fence: Broke Terribly Under Gutierrez but Finished with Good Courage for 2nd

Three year old gelding for Antonio Garcia was in for a $25,000 claiming tag for sophomores on Friday, at five and a half on the main. Off at 3/1 in a field of just six with two late scratches, he broke terribly under Mario Gutierrez and was quickly 8 lengths back of the leaders and dead last. The jock got him over to the fence to save ground, tipped him out at the top of the lane, and he finished with good courage out in the middle of the track to get up for second, beaten two at the wire. The winner cruised on the front end but this gelding was best had he broken with his field. This is his level and he’s eligible for those $20,000 non winners of three that they write in every condition book. Plus he could use a rider switch as Gutierrez does nothing right these days, including getting a horse away from the gate. Either way, he’s sitting on a win in the very near future.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Stay On the Fence was cabable of.  We expected that if Stay On the Fence gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Stay On the Fence performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Stay On the Fence last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Stay On the Fence next start.  If Stay On the Fence appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Stay On the Fence will dominate the race.
