Tamara: As Long as She Doesn’t Draw The Rail She’ll Be a Handful

Three year old filly for Richard Mandella made her long awaited return to the races on Friday in an allowance race, non winners of three other than at six furlongs on the main, 3 and up. Off as the 1 to 5 shot in a field of six, she unfortunately drew the rail and it probably cost her the race. She broke a step slow under Mike Smith and was 4th down the back side and in tight quarters. The winner got away on a lonely lead and had two on the field for the first three furlongs. Tamara inched up and finally got off the fence at the 3/8 pole, swung to the two path to contest the early leader, and got to her on even terms by the 1/8 pole. But Sandy Bottoms, who is now 3 for 3 in her career, had plenty left and Tamara couldn’t get by, though she pretty much had the length of the stretch to do so. She lost by a half of a head at the wire, but Mandella got a tightener in her and accomplished what he wanted, though he certainly would have liked to win the race. He will now point her to the Grade 1 La Brea for sophomore fillies at Anita on opening day at 7 furlongs and as long as she doesn’t draw the rail, she will be a handful for her competition.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Tamara was cabable of.  We expected that if Tamara gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Tamara performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Tamara last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Tamara next start.  If Tamara appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Tamara will dominate the race.
