Five year old full horse for Richard Mandella tried the 7 furlong Cary Grant stakes on Saturday on the main track where he has run second in the last two years. However, this year The Chosen Vron is on the sidelines and he didn’t have to worry about losing to him, which he had done 4 consecutive times. Off as the 4 to 5 favorite in a field of just five, he broke OK under Kazushi Kimura and sat third down the back side, just 3 off the leaders. The fractions were quick as they went 44.23 for the half and when Kimura saw an opening at the rail at the 3/8 pole, he zipped through it and the race was basically over. He quickly opened up two on the field and by the time they hit the stretch it was four open lengths and widening. He cruised on home to win by 8.5 at the wire and he had some pretty nice company behind him in Man O Rose, Curlin’s Kaos, and None Above the Law. This was his 6th win in just 12 trips to the post and he has never been out of the top three in his career which include three graded stakes. His earnings now stand at $503,420 and the time for 7/8 was 1:21.39 which is excellent. Look for Mandella to find a graded sprint for him in the near future and he will get the job done once again.
