Vodka With a Twist: Huge Effort While Holding Second Beaten by Four at Wire

Two year old filly for Phil D’Amato tried two turns for the 1st time in her 6 time race career on Friday in the Grade 1 B/C juvenile Fillies at a mile and a sixteenth on the main. Off at 8/1 and bet down from a morning line of 20/1 in a field of 9, she broke running from the one hole and settled in third down the back side, six lengths back of the runaway leader. Champion rider Irad Ortiz asked her for run at the 3/8 pole and she got off the fence and went after the leader who set quick fractions and was backing up quickly. She stuck her head in front at the top of the stretch but had no answer for the favorite who was looming up on the outside of her. She battled gamely down the lane and held second beaten four at the wire. It was a huge effort and this daughter of Thousand Words might be given a brief freshening now and aim for the sophomore fillies series at Santa Anita with the S.A Oaks her long time goal. They now know she can get two turns and looks to have a bright future as a sophomore.
