Montjica (FR): No Speed In This Race And Can Win With a Target To Catch

Four year old filly bred in France made her 2nd U.S. start on Saturday in a 1st allowance condition at a mile on the grass, 3 and up. Off at 7/2 in a field of 9 and adding the blinkers for the very first time, Mike Smith sent her right to the lead from the one hole and she had two on the field into the clubhouse turn. She still had two on the field down the back side, still had the lead at the top of the lane, and battled gamely from the rail down the stretch to lose by a length to a perfect tripper from off the pace. She is certainly good enough to win this condition and she probably does her best when she has a target to run at, but there was no speed in this race whatsoever, so Smith took her to the lead over a surface very much favoring late runners. Her next start will be her third off an 11 month break and she is set for her best.
