The Grade 1, $600,000 Spinster Stakes will be run at Keeneland on Sunday, October 6, 2024, and this is Win & You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The six entrants will travel 1 1/18 miles on the main track and Idiomatic is the strong 3-5 morning line favorite. The Grade 1 Spinster goes as the ninth race on Sunday with a scheduled post time of 5:16 p.m. EDT.

Spinster Analysis

#1 Idiomatic (3-5) is an 11-for-16 mare for Brad Cox. She won the Grade Personal Ensign, Spinster, and Breeders’ Cup Distaff last year. She has not been quite as good this year but is still a formidable early-pressing performer, and she owns the best recent Today’s Racing Digest Final Tim Ratings. She won the Grade 1 La Troienne in May, missed by a head in the Ogden Phipps (G1) in June, and was all out to beat inferior foes by a head in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher in July. Last time, she battled through strong fractions, opened up, and got run down by Raging Sea in a tough beat in the Personal Ensign (G1). She should be all over the pace from the inside post and is classier than this group.

#2 Candied (9-2) is an improving 3-year-old filly for Todd Pletcher. She won the local Grade 1 Alcibiades last fall and followed that up with a close show finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). She needed her Ashland (G1) return in April, looked good winning the listed Lady’s Secret in June, and was clearly second best behind Thorpedo Anna in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) on July 20. I made her my top choice in the Alabama (G1) last time and she made the first closing move and was nipped late by Power Squeeze in a head defeat. She looks second best on paper and can run on for the place.
