Shea Brennan: Best Horse In Field But Needs To Learn To Break With Company

Two year old colt for Phil D’Amato broke poorly once again for the 2nd straight start and this time it cost him the money. Off at 3 to 5 in a field of five in the I’m Smokin stakes for Cal bred two year olds at ¾ on the main he broke awkwardly from the dreaded rail post and was away last. Then he rushed up on the rail under Kyle Frey and quickly got back into the race, but Frey ran him up onto a horse’s heels, checked badly again at the 3/8 pole and got shuffled back. He still tried to come on again in the stretch but he had little left at this point and ended up third beaten four at the wire. There is no doubt he was the best horse in this field, but he has to learn to break with his company and until he does he won’t win any more races, as he got away with it in his debut. But D’Amato is one of the best on this circuit and he will figure this one out quickly. After all, he is a runner and that’s more than half the battle.
