By Jarrod Horak
There were no points races on the road to Kentucky Oaks 2024 last weekend, but things really heat up on March 23. The Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks is the big race this week. The winner of that race will receive 100 Oaks points. The Bourbonette Oaks is the other Oaks prep on March 23, and the winner will pick up 50 Oaks points.Â

Jarrod Horak’s Fabulous Five Kentucky Oaks 2024 Contenders (3-18-24)
#1 – INTRICATE (Gun Runner – Complex Analysis, by Distorted Humor) – Trainer: Brendan Walsh
Comments: Last year’s Golden Rod (G2) winner came running for the place in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) on Feb. 17. She has worked three times since that race. The Gun Runner filly had identical back-to-back half-mile moves in 48 flat on Feb. 29 and March 8, and breezed 5f in 1:01 (7/30) on March 15. She will try to turn the tables on Tarifa in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 23.
#2 – TARIFA (Bernardini – Kite Beach, by Awesome Again) – Trainer: Brad Cox
Comments: She worked out a nice stalking trip and got the jump on Intricate in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra. That was her first stakes attempt and she is clearly on the upswing for Brad Cox. She breezed a half-mile in 49.80 (37/75) on March 3 and traveled a half-mile in 49 (12/41) on March 9. Her final work for the FG Oaks was a 5f move in 1:01.40 (17/30) on March 15.
#3 – KOPION (Omaha Beach – Galloping Ami, by Victory Gallop) – Trainer: Richard MandellaÂ
Comments: She could not match strides with Kinza in the Grade 3 Las Virgenes on Feb. 10, and that filly clicked right back in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel on March 9. She has been targeting the April 6 Santa Anita Oaks (G2) for several weeks. The Omaha Beach filly has worked three times since the Las Virgenes. She went an easy 3f in 38.20 (14/16) on Feb. 29, and fired back-to-back 6f bullets on March 10 and March 18.Â
#4 – JUST F Y I (Justify – Star Act, by Street Cry) – Trainer: Bill Mott
Comments: The 2-year-old filly champ came down with a fever and missed the Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park on March 2. After she missed that event, Bill Mott mentioned three races as options for her lone Kentucky Oaks prep this year. The GP Oaks and Fantasy will be run on March 30, and the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland on April 5 is the other possibility. She breezed six times at Payson Park from Jan. 29 through Feb. 24 so she does have some level of fitness. In her first work since the fever, she fired a half-mile bullet in 47.60 (1/12) on March 18.Â
#5 – WEST OMAHA (West Coast – Birthday Bash, by Medaglia d’Oro) – Trainer: Brad Cox
Comments: The Silverbulletday winner did not have an ideal trip when running third in the Honeybee (G3) on Feb. 24. She breezed a half-mile in 49 (7/49) at Oaklawn on March 14, and the Fantasy Stakes at that venue on March 30 seems like a logical target.
