Velocity: McCarthy’s Filly Delivers Thrilling Late Rally for Maiden Win; Nyquist Daughter Poised to Thrive Around Two Turns

Three year old filly for Mike McCarthy made start #2 in Saturday’s finale, a sprint on the turf at six and a half out of the chute for 3,4, and 5 yr. olds. Off at 8/1 in a field off 11, she broke OK under Ricky Gonzalez and was five back down the back side racing on the extreme outside. She was still six back of the leaders at the ¼ pole, still on the outside, but starting her run at the leaders. Gonzo kept her well wide down the lane and then she showed a quick turn of foot the final furlong and won a desperate decision right on the wire by a nose. She did nothing in her debut on the dirt but came out of a very strong race with Glatt’s Formula Rossa and Baffert’s Brilliantly, who came back to win. This daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist should have no trouble with two turns and McCarthy has plenty of options for her first allowance condition.

Generally horses that are on the Horses To Watch list ran into unexpected trouble, bad luck, and/or didn’t run the race we believe Velocity was cabable of.  We expected that if Velocity gets a good trip in their next start than we should see an improvement in Velocity performance figures.  Use the performance figures earned in Velocity last race (listed above) and compare them to the field and pars of Velocity next start.  If Velocity appears to have earned higher performance figures in the last race when running into trouble  as compared to the rest of the field’s expected perfomance in the upcoming race than there is a good chance that Velocity will dominate the race.

Helpful Tip:  So that it’s easy for you to compare a horse’s past performance, Today’s Racing Digest’s Performance Figures for upcoming races are based on how we expect the horse to perform in that race regardless of any changes in race conditions.  Learn More: Â
