Pride of the Nile: Broke a Step Slow But Came Up 1/2 Length Short To Gallop Past Winner After Wire

Three year old filly for Doug O’Neill tried the Grade 3 Las Virgenes stakes on Saturday at a mile on the main track for soph fillies. Off at 7/2 in a field of six, she broke a step slow under J.J. and was 4th into the clubhouse turn. She stayed in 4th down the back side, five back of the leaders, found a seam at the top of the lane, and gamely tried to catch the even money favorite the final sixteenth. She came up a half length short at the wire but galloped out past the winner just yards after the wire. She was washy in the paddock today and that probably didn’t help matters, but she is all race horse and hasn’t run a bad one in five trips to the post. She has won twice on the lawn as well. Look for O’Neill to find a winning spot for her even if he has to ship.
