Ma Rae’s Girl: O’Neill’s Ma Rae Lights Up Board at 35/1 with Strong Stakes Effort; Primed for Allowance Victory Next Out

Four year old filly for Doug O’Neill tried the Wishing Well stakes at six furlongs on the grass for older fillies and mares on Saturday and ran huge at 35/1. In a field of six, Maldonado sent her right to the front and she set fractions of 22.22 for the quarter and 44.73 for the half with her much heralded stable mate just to her outside. She put Stay and Scam away at the top of the lane, but had no answer for the heavy odds on favorite who sailed right on by to win by four at the wire. But Ma Rae hung on gamely for second and it was three back to the third horse with some pretty nice female sprinters in her rear view mirror. She still has the 2nd allowance condition available and this daughter of the good sire Mendelssohn can win short or long, turf or dirt. Lots of options for O’Neill, so let’s just hope he tries to win the allowance condition and keep her out of stakes until she does.
