Lucky N Smart: If Can Get Away Clean He’s Soon A Winner

Three year old gelding for Carla Gaines made his debut in Saturday’s 4th, a Cal bred maiden special weight event at ¾ on the grass, 3 and up. Off at 5/1 and drawing the rail in a 10 horse field, he bobbled at the start and was away last, then bobbled again at the dirt cross over. He moved up some under Rispoli, but was still six back at the 3/8 pole. The jock kept him on the fence but had no room down the lane, until he finally swung out at the 1/16 pole. Then he finished stoutly to get second beaten two and a half at the wire. All in all, a very creditable debut considering all of the trouble. His works were good coming into the race but he had a habit of breaking slowly. Gaines needs to work on that and if he can get away clean, he’s a soon winner in the Cal bred ranks.
